The End – Joshua Oppenheimer BLU-RAY

From Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer comes THE END: a one-of-a-kind tale set at the end of the world. Taking shape as a soaring musical, this TIFF and London Film Festival selection asks a resonant question for us all: what happens when you recognize that your life, and your family, aren’t what you thought they were? Twenty-five years after environmental collapse left the Earth uninhabitable, one family clings to a sense of normalcy while confined to a palatial bunker. Wealthy ex-ballerina Mother, former oil executive Father, their precocious Son (and a chosen few companions) keep a happy routine. But when a Girl turns up at their underground doorstep, with her own past and a plain-spoken perspective, the group’s blind optimism begins to unravel. As long-repressed emotions resurface, and a connection blossoms between the outsider and the Son, a changed existence becomes the only way forward. Starring Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton, George MacKay (1917), Moses Ingram and Academy Award nominee Michael Shannon, THE END is an inspired showcase for today’s best actors. Rich with daring, romance, and song, this clear-eyed vision blends satire and sincerity to shed light on the conflict between the truth and the stories we tell.
